Why cultivate plants when natural stands are plentiful? Still a mystery. Studies of foraging societies shows that only 2-3 days are required for an individual to gather enough food to eat for a week. Here are a few proposed theories:
1. Agriculture arose as an accident. People threw old fruits and seeds on the trash heap (midden). These plants then grew up there and people made the connection that they could intentionally plant seeds.
2. Agriculture arose as a consequence of gradual cultural evolution. It occurred ca. 10,000 years ago in many different parts of the world. People progressed from foragers, to herders of animals, to farmers. Simply a consequence of being very "tuned in" to the animals and plants around them. Domestication of plants followed that of animals.
3. Another idea was that drought caused humans and wild animals to occupy smaller areas near water. This caused people to domesticate animals. The soil was disturbed by the animals being confined to smaller spaces. Also, animal manure was added. This encouraged weedy species to grow here. Humans then utilized these weedy species as crops.

А по-моему, все проще - лень, как всегда, двигатель прогресса.
Вместо того чтобы каждую неделю ходить по яблоки ла семь верст до реки, легче один раз принести яблоню к пещере - такова была общая идея. (Получилось, понятно, не сразу)
